Sometimes it takes leaving home to truly find yourself.

THE PARENTHESES PHILOSOPHY

I'm a Random House travel author, so when I go abroad, my goal is not to hit a bunch of famous monuments, but rather to feel like I have immersed myself in a new world. I like to see things from a different perspective, one that winds up expanding my view of the place where I was born. Oh, and I like to have fun too. That might be even more important.

Parentheses Lodging:
Cabins in Copacabana, Bolivia

More about Parentheses cabins...

It looks like a traditional adobe cabin on the outside. The inside includes modern conveniences such as high-speed wi-fi, satellite TV with HBO, Cinemax and 130 other channels (most of which can be switched between Spanish and English), a microwave and an espresso maker.
Parentheses Cabins look like any other Bolivian adobe house on the outside
Unlike other lodging options in Copacabana, we like to think that a stay here is a cultural experience in and of itself. You'll find yourself surrounded by herds of sheep and pigs as well as Bolivians in traditional dress taking their llamas out to graze.

The bedroom is a loft surrounded by candles and includes a 32-inch flat screen TV with 130 satellite channels
The bedroom is a loft with a double bed surrounded by candles for a romantic evening. Or just in case the power goes out. There is a 32-inch flat screen TV with 130 satellite channels (most of which can be switched between English and Spanish) including HBO, Cinemax and Sundance.
Instead of exposed brick, the living room wall is of exposed adobe

This is the living room. Who needs exposed brick when you have exposed adobe, right?

The bathroom finishings are all natural materials: cement, sheet metal and wood

We used natural materials as much as possible in the house. As a result, the bathroom turned out kind of Zen. Namaste!

The kitchen includes a microwave, mini-fridge and espresso bar
The kitchen includes a microwave and free espresso bar. The fridge is stocked with beer, wine, and homemade entrees that can be purchased for an oh-so-reasonable cost.

To get down from the loft, try using the adult slide

Adult slide anyone? Makes going to the bathroom in the middle of the night so much easier. But mostly it's tons of fun.
The office area includes a desk, wi-fi and a view of the mountains
There is a small office area with a desk for writing or simply using the high-speed wi-fi. Did I mention that it's the fastest wi-fi in Copacabana? Okay, remember we're in Bolivia, so don't get your hopes up too high.

My husband created the pebble floor of our shower
My husband and I collected pebbles from the shores of Lake Titicaca to create our rock shower floor. It was a lot of backbreaking work. You're welcome.  :-)

The loft includes a double bed and a window with a view of Lake Titicaca
This is the most comfortable mattress I've ever slept on. As long as you don't bump your head on the ceiling in the morning (it is a loft, after all) you'll swear it was the best night's rest of your life. Unless the sheep keep you up. Or the roosters. But the mattress? Fabulous!

Lake Titicaca viewed from the loft window
The loft window has a view of Lake Titicaca. Somehow I can never get enough of those cerulean blue waters. Or maybe they're cornflower blue? Cobalt hued?

REACH OUT. WE'D LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU.
